Strap yourself in for an armchair traveler’s journey of a lifetime and join newly anointed U.S. citizen Chandrapal “Chandu” Kaman as he takes to the skies in his ultralight airplane. This is the unique aviation adventure of a new American. As Chandu gets a bird’s-eye view of his new country, a few hundred feet above the ground–it is also the celebration of a 22-year effort to obtain U.S. citizenship.

Footage shot in multiple media formats and uploaded to the Internet an interactive, collaborative experience where both pilot and audience will explore what it means to be an American – past, present, and in the not-so-distant future.

Triking Around America Sketch

As Chandu takes off from Jamestown; “the sire of Virginia, and Virginia the mother of this great Republic”–he will collaborate, and share with the rest of the world his many adventures and discoveries. The uniqueness of this expedition is all about “the power-of-many” concept: the audience follows along every day; they’ll interact, make suggestions, and even share their own stories about what it means to be an American.

Chandu’s itinerary can change at any time based on this ongoing dialog, making it a rich experience for everyone involved. Chandu will swoop down and encounter various Americans and iconic places significant to his nation’s history — and its continued evolution. His audience will direct him to meet with many Americans of all backgrounds and generations, immigrants and their various ethnic hubs: Native American [i.e. American Indians] nations, the Amish, etc. He will visit the important landmarks and iconic places of this country from Plymouth Rock, Revolutionary War landmarks, Civil War monuments, Gettysburg, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s tomb in Atlanta to modern monuments of America – spaceports and other cultural and historical landmarks.

Certainly, there’s some risk involved, from Chandu’s fragile, yet unique mode of travel to how a dark-complexioned stranger descending unannounced from the heavens will be met in post 9/11 America. Most importantly, will Chandu’s vision of his newly adopted country jibe with the vision held by people born and raised in the US?

At the end of this journey, this project will serve as a digital guide to all things American and continue to educate the many new citizens about what it means to be American. It will also show another side of America to the rest of the world as seen thru the eyes of an immigrant and a new citizen. Suzanne Lee, a fellow explorer and adventurer in her own right, will pictorially document this American journey.
